Materials

In accordance with our desire for ADORN to be attire for your everyday, we ensure that our pieces are made from only the highest quality materials. However, in order to ensure that your jewelry endures the test of time, it’s important that you understand its composition and create a care regimen relevant to each material. Read here more about the composition of your ADORN pieces.

14 karat Gold

The gold pieces we make are responsibly sourced 14 karat gold. Either from a certified recycled source or artisanale mined by indigenous cultures and through a controlled refining process which ensures it conforms with environmental standards and supports grassroots economies.

The14 karat gold is a mixture composed of 58% yellow gold and 42% alloyed metals. This alloy consists of silver and copper. Because of the higher percentage of alloyed metals, 14 karat gold offers a higher level of durability and more resistance to wear and tear, making it perfect for everyday use. Like 925 sterling silver, gold is not very reactive; however, the more you wear a piece the more likely it is to tarnish or corrode.

Take care of your gold pieces by removing them before showering or cleaning, and ensuring they are safely stored when not being worn – gold is a soft metal and can easily be scratched by contact with other hard metals. To restore the shine, buff your gold jewelry with a soft non-abrasive cloth, whilst for a proper clean feel free to soak your pieces in a solution of non-chemical soap and warm water.

14 karat Golden Bronze

The bronze pieces are made of an alloy consisting of  30% bronze which is a combination of copper and tin. Together with 60% 925 sterling silver and around 5% 14 karat yellow gold, it's durable and easy to care for. With proper attention, these pieces will last for years to come. However, due to the copper content in these pieces, there is a greater chance of oxidation when in contact with the natural oils within our skin, leaving a light greenish color of copper carbonate on the skin (it’s not harmful, don’t worry!). Expect this in warm weather, particularly when wearing a tight ring that doesn’t allow for air circulation between the skin and metal. Due to the higher reactivity of metals such as copper, bronze jewelry is more likely to tarnish over time. Keep your bronze pieces looking shiny and clean by regularly polishing with a non-abrasive cloth.

Gold-Vermeil

Gold-vermeil is genuine 925 sterling silver that has been coated in a layer of 2,5 micron 14 karat gold, making it the perfect balance between quality and value. Unlike gold-plating, which can be use a host of different metals as a base, gold-vermeil only uses premium materials (gold and silver) and is therefore perfect for those worried about metal allergies. Care for your gold-vermeil pieces as you would for 14 karat gold jewelry.

Sterling silver

All of our silver jewelry is made with 925 sterling silver (an alloy made up of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper) – the highest standard within the industry. It is locally sourced in Indonesia and is checked for quality both before and after being fired and shaped into the pieces you wear and love. Though not very reactive, silver is prone to tarnishing. Keep your pieces clean and shiny by polishing them with a soft line-free cloth. Do not used paper towels or harsher materials as these can leave visible scratches on the metal surface.
